The passage indicates that Mrs. Pumphrey’s attitude shows confusion.

Mrs. Pumphrey began bringing fresh eggs, and that too, two dozens at a time. Then she began getting bottles of wine to help Tricki recover quickly. Under normal circumstances, eggs and wine would help an unwell human being recover, but in this case, these items only showed that Mrs. Pumphrey was a very confused lady.

First she was getting these things not for a human, but for a dog. A dog enjoys eggs, but dogs generally do not drink wine unless they are excessively pampered.

Also, Tricki was already suffering because of being overfed. On top of that, Mrs. Pumphrey is getting even more food for him. She thinks he needs the food for quicker recovery. So, she is quite confused and does not understand that it is the food itself that has made him ill.
