India does not follow a federal model of governance as it is not a federation like the United States of America, but a union of states that is indestructible in nature (inherently)

Indian system follows the centripetal model where the power from centre flows towards the periphery(states).

Going by the definition..

A unitary government is one where all the powers are vested in national government and regional government derives their authority from national government. Whereas, a federal government is one where powers are divided between national and regional government by constitution itself.

So, what is the model of governance in India?

Ans: It is quasi-federal in nature, in other words Indian system of governance is a federal system with unitary bias.

Thus, K.C wheare remarked that, “Indian union is unitary state with subsidiary federal features rather than a federal state with subsidiary unitary features.

The constitution has given more power to centre in some cases like concurrent list, president’s rule, expenditure, single citizenship, integrated judiciary, Appointment of governor, vetonover state bills.

And in some other matters like, dual polity, written constitution, division of powers, rigid constitution, independent judiciary and bicameralism enhances federal features.

And our governance system is combination of both.
