The work done on the system when one mole of an ideal gas is compressed isothermally to a final
volume of 0.01 m^3at constant external pressure of 5 bar is 20 kJ. What is initial volume of the gas?

Answer:

n=1 mole

P1=1 bar

P2=4 bar

T=300 K

It is a reversible & isothermal process.

∴ work done =−nRTln(P2P1)

                       =−1×8.314×300×ln(41)

                       =3457.69J

                        =3.457KJ

As the ideal gas is compressed, W>0

∴ work done =+3.457KJ
