work done by a gas is product of its avg. pressure over change in temperature.
here avg pressure is 0.5 atm and change in volume is 200 cm3
so,work done is 200 x 0.5 = 100 J

Given:

External pressure (P) = 0.50atm

Initial volume = 400cm^3 = 0.4 L

Final volume = 200cm^3 = 0.2 L

To find:

Work done = ?

Formula to be used:

W = -P.ΔV

where:

P = Pressure

ΔV = V_{final}-V_{initial}

Calculation:

ΔV = V_{final}-V_{initial}

ΔV = 0.2 L - 0.4 L

ΔV = -0.2 L

When ΔV value is substituted in the work done formula, it gives:

W = -P.ΔV

W = -(0.50) × (-0.2 L)

W = 0.1 I atm

W = 0.1 × 101.33     (∵ 1 I atm = 101.33 J)

W = 10.133 J

Conclusion:

The work done when a gas compressed by an average pressure of a.0.50 atm so as to decreases its volume from 400cm3 to 200 cm is found to be 10.133J
