It is very difficult to answer who was the pilot on the strange black aeroplane because when he asked the woman in the control centre she said that she didn't see any other aeroplane except the narrator's old Dakota. Maybe it was the narrator himself that helped him to overcome the fear in the storm, it can be that he is hallucinating as he himself was a good pilot.
