we can spilt the middle term

X^2-5X-8X+40

NOW we can factorise

x (x-5)-8 (x-5)

therefore x-5 and x-8 are the two numbers where 5 and 8 are two solutions

x2+5x+8x+40

X(X+5)+8(X+5)

(X+8)(x+5)=0

X+8=0

x=-8

x+5=0

X=-5

the roots are-8 and -5
