the constituent assembly adopted the constitution on 26 November 1949 but its came into effect on 26 January 1950. to mark this day we celebrate January 26 as Republic day every year. this day in 1930 it was declared Indian independence from British . so that's the reason it was enforced.

before the Independence from the Britishers, in the year 1929, during the Lahore Season in December Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as President and Congress finally voted for Purna Swaraj and it was proposed that the last Sunday of January 1930 would be celebrated as Independence Day which incidentically fell on 26.
on that day Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolour at Bank of Ravi river at Lahore and we celebrated our first independence day but the Britishers were still around and it wasn't a complete Independence.
Then after the Independence Day, since our constitutional assembly was formed in 1926 the constitution was ready by January 26, 1949 after a period of 2 years 11 months and 8 days. But it honour of our Purna Swaraj, our leaders decided to wait for 2 more months and Inforce to January 26, 1950.
=> this is how 26 January came to be known as Republic Day.
