Was proof of human sin
They did not die from the cold without

[a]  The poet says that the logs were held tightly in their hands because they don't want to warm their enemy . Which clearly signifies that they have committed a sin.

[b]  Poet is referring to human sins like racism of race, religion, caste, color, etc. and prejudice. The log is symbolic to their sins.

[c]  it means that the six persons died not of the cold outside but they died of their cold heart who is in mood of hostility.
