Bholi was a very shy girl. She used to stammer. But a lot of change took place in her personality after she joined school.

Her teacher helped to change the direction of her life. She showered a lot of love and affection on her and gave her a new hope. She helped her to gain confidence and faith in herself.

Bholi's  teacher asked her to give up all her fears. It was because of her teacher's guidance that Bholi developed her personality. She learned to face all the problems of life with courage and confidence.
Towards the end of the story, Bholi was referred to by her real name Sulekha because she had grown wiser and more self confident. All this was possible because of her education and her teacher’s training. Her life showed that education was like a philosopher’s stone which could turn a base metal into gold.

Bholi, the youngest daughter of Ramlal had a troubled childhood. A fall from the bed when she was ten months old affected her brain, memory and behavior partly. At the age of two, a bout of small-pox left her entire body scarred and deprived her of her speech. When she started speaking at the age of five, she could only stammer. As a result, everyone made fun of her and she was lonely. When the tashildar of the village inaugrated a school for children, he requested Ramlal to send Bholi there.

Family and emotional security have a great impact on children. As she did not get this from her mother,Bholi’s development was affected and she failed to develop self-conficence. Also, the story stresses on the fact that differently abled children must be treated like their normal counterparts in their ways.
This is what her teacher did in school and she soon became a well-groomed person. She also came to be known by her actual name Surekha.
