Friendship is one of the important themes around which the story 'God Lives in the Panch' revolves. Jumman and Alagu are best of friends but there friendship suffers a setback when Alagu gives his judgment against Jumman when his aunt sued him for taking all his property and not providing for her needs and ill-treating her in her old age though he had promised it before getting the property transferred in his name. Jumman bears an ill-will against Alagu until he himself becomes a panch to render judgment on the conflict between Alagu and Samjhu Sahu who had purchased Alagu's bullock and denied paying him on the pretext that the bullock died after a few days. The bulluck had died due ro overwork though. At that moment he realized that as the Head Punch he forgot his grudge against Alagu and gave his verdict in favour of Alagu. He realized that what Alagu decided anout his case was the verdict that came from God as He lives in the Panch. Their friendship is restored and hence the theme of friendship is clearly brought out by the author.
