The 19th century British novelist Thomas Hardy wrote about traditional rural communities of England that were fast vanishing.

He wrote the novel at the time when large farmers fenced off land , bought machines and employed labourers to produce for the market.

ln this novel he also highlighted how the old rural culture with its independent farmers were dieing out.

He also touched the point of problems and advantages of the new management methods.

lt is about Michael Henchard a successful grain merchant who becomes the mayor of the farming town of Casterbridge and all about the consequences.
