The story OLD MAN AT THE BRIDGE focuses on the horrors of the war and how it affects the normal life of innocent people who have to do nothing with artillery. It is an anti war story. It has a fatalistic hero who describes the inevitability of death of every common man. In the story, he is not willing to live any more without his animals that are pigeons, cats and goats.
