Answer:
The main theme of the poem is that how human life is effected badly due to war. John Brown, a soldier, went off to fight on a foreign shore, an alien land, or a foreign country. His mother was very proud of him that he was a soldier, and has the capability of holding a gun and wearing the dress of a soldier, when all if a sudden, his son left for the war. She acted(oxymoron) proudly infront of all her neighbors that her son was a soldier and that she was extremely proud of him.Letters used to come, not on a daily basis, but after a certain time interval. After sometime, letters ceased to come. Finally one of her neighbours told her one day that that day all the soldiers were coming to the town, she should also go and pick up her darling son from the station. As John's mommy went to the station, she could not see her son at first, but saw him at the last, when she was extremely shocked to see that his eyes were blown off by a cannonball and his hands were also blown off, and h was wearing a metal brace around his waist for support. She asked him about his condition, he then said that mom, when I was fighting the war, you were acting proud in home, you were no at my shoes He said that as he began fighting, he was shocked to see that the enemies had a face similar to John. (shocked to see that he is going to kill another man).
