Although this poem is best read as a narrative poem of
equisite beauty,it does have a very significant theme.
The ancient mariner commits a sin of killing an albatross a
beautiful creature of GOD.For his sin he has to undergo
great suffering.Even his fellow sailors who unwittingly
side with him approve the killing of bird as a sin.
Thust the theme suggests the best form of prayer
is to love the beautiful creatures near us.

The theme of the poem is sin and repentance. The sin committed by the ancient mariner is killing of the auspicious bird albatross. he had no reason to kill the friendly bird who brought them favorable conditions and saved them from their miseries. he had done it in a state of madness, in a fit of madness. But any sin committed whether knowingly or unknowingly will lead to great woes and despair, and this is portrayed in the poem .
