In the first half we witness the theme of cruelty.

Rahim is described as a cruel man. He is not nice towards his children that why his family has left him, Rahim takes out his bitterness on his children but in the end he let go of his  anger  and becomes a content person.

The author further explores the theme of change seen in a difficult person. He suggests that it is difficult for people to see the good change as they were used to his violent side. The author explores the theme of fear at end of the chapter.
