This expression has been used several times in the course of the play and is apparently said by Tom’s father. On careful reading of the play this expression proves to be true through the analysis of the character of Mrs Parker.

Initially anyone would regard Mrs Parker as an inconsequential woman living a life of seclusion, but when she herself reveals her true motive for staying at that lonely place, not only the audience but also Tom and Alec were surprised. Also the way she deals with Joe and her total composure in the presence of the police officers prove the veracity of the statement.
