I assume you mean, A ship travels 12 km due south… etc. In which case it finishes 15 km east, and (20–12) km north of its starting point.
So you have a right-angled triangle. You need to find the hypotenuse, and the other two sides are 15 and (20–12) km.
Now go and read-up about Pythagoras if you can’t remember what you were taught, and do the sums. The numbers are very straight-forward. It’s almost as if they were deliberately chosen to makes the maths easier…
