boy, shrieking with fright, put on speed. But Katherine was quicker. She stopped the boy and dragged him to the
dispensary. A smear of vaccine was scraped from his arm. Rewarded, he was allowed to run away.
That was enough for Dr. Cook to vaccinate six others, who were kept carefully under observation. From them twenty
more were vaccinated by the arm-to-arm method.
A week later, fifty, until in one day, 800 were vaccinated, some of the fighting to get into the dispensary for the magical
medicine. The smallpox was defeated with hardly any loss of life.
