Twisting, withering,

And then it is done.

(a) “Then the matter..” What does ‘Then’ refer to?

(b) What role do the sun and air play in killing a tree?

Answer:

After uprooting, the root is to be exposed to sunlight , and air for scorching and choking. Then, it goes through a process of browning, hardening, twisting and withering. Then only is the tree killed completely.
