The ribosomes are tiny granules composed of rRNAs and proteins. They are sites of protein synthesis in the cytoplasm, mitochondria and plastids. They occur singly or in rows, called polysomes, in the cytosol or on RER membranes and outer nuclear membrane. Each ribosome consists of small and a large subunits, which join for protein synthesis.
