1. The title of the poem is ‘The Laburnum Top’, and the poet is Ted Hughes.

The poem is about a goldfinch and a laburnum tree. The poet captures the excitement that the bird brings about when it alights on the tree and then the change in the general excitement levels once the bird leaves the tree.

2. ‘She’ here refers to the goldfinch which is the bird that the poet has focussed on, in the poem.

3. The laburnum tree becomes very quiet and ‘empty’ after the goldfinch leaves.

4. The words ‘subsides to empty’ mean ‘becomes tranquil’. Tranquillity means peace. When a place is ‘empty’, it is obviously quiet or tranquil.
