THEORY

A rotating shaft carries four masses 176.6 N, 137.3 N, 157 N and

117 N at radii 5 cm, 6 cm, 7 cm and 6 cm respectively. The second,

third and fourth masses revolve in planes 8 cm, 16 cm and 28 cm

respectively measured from the plane of the first mass (at the left

end). They are angularly located at 60o

, 135o

and 270o

respectively

measured clockwise from the first mass (at the positive x-axis).

The shaft is dynamically balanced by two masses both located at 5

cm radii and revolving in planes midway between those of 1st and

2

nd masses and midway between those of 3rd and 4th masses.

Determine the magnitude of the masses and their respective

angular positions.

Question

Step 1 Given Data

The masses of the shaft is given as,

m1=176.6 Nm2=137.3 Nm3=157 Nm4=117 N

The radii of the rotating shaft is given as,

r1=5 cmr2=6 cmr3=7 cmr4=6 cm

The measured clockwise angle is given as,

θ1=0∘θ2=0∘+60∘θ2=60∘θ3=60∘+135∘θ3=195∘θ4=195∘+270∘θ4=465∘

The planes measured are given as,

I1=5 cmI2=8 cmI3=16 cmI4=28 cm
