n poles will have n-1 spaces between them

10 ploes will have:

10 - 1 spaces

= 9 spaces

The total distance =  distance bewteen two poles x number of spaces

Total distance = 1/2 x 9

                        = 4.5 m

The distance between the poles at the two ends = 4.5m
