There are 120 books altogether on a shelf .the top row has 11 more books than the middle one. The bottom row holds 5 books fewer than the middle one. How many books are there on top row.

( x+11)+x+(x-5) = 120

or,x+11+x+x-5=120

Therefore,the number of books in the top row is= (38+11)books=49 books
