Answer:

25 Answer can not be 50 since there is only 36 total potatoes and onions.

Step-by-step explanation:

P+O=36, P+(P-14)=36,2P-14=36,2P=36+14,2P=50,P=50/2,P=25

There are 2 methods of solving this problem:

1. Algebraic method

2. Model drawing method

----------------------------------------------------

Algebraic method

----------------------------------------------------

Define x:

Let x be the number of onions.

Onions = x

There are 14 more potatoes than onion:

potatoes = x + 14

There are 36 potatoes and onions:

x + (x + 14) = 36

x + x + 14 = 36

2x + 14 = 36

2x = 22

x = 11

Find the number of potatoes:

Potatoes = x + 14

Potatoes = 11 + 14

Potatoes = 25

Answer: There are 25 potatoes

----------------------------------------------------

Model Drawing method

----------------------------------------------------

* See attached for the model drawing

2 units = 36 - 14

2 units = 22

1 unit = 22 ÷ 2

1 unit = 11

Onions = 1 unit

Onions = 11

Potatoes = 1 unit + 14

Potatoes = 11 + 14

Potatoes = 25

Answer: There are 25 potatoes
