Answer:

First you get the 4 liters jug and fill it up. Pour the four liters in the 5 liters jug. Fill the 4 liters jug again, and use it to complete the missing one liter in the 5 liters jug. Now you have exactly three liters in the four liters jug. Pour them in a bucket, fill the four liter again with water from the five liter jug and add the four liters to the three in the bucket. Three plus four = seven liters in the bucket.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that both the jugs are completely filled initially we can use the jugs to make the following measurements initially.

  • 4 liters or 5 liters directly ,by using completely filled jug to measure
  • 1 liter by using combination of empty 4 liter jug and filled 5 liter jug.

To fill the bucket with 7 liters, we need to use the jugs to store water such that we are able to accommodate 3 liter or 2 liters of water either in the jug or in the bucket ,which when combined with the water of completely filled jugs and put in the bucket, gives 7 liters of water.

  1. Initially filling the bucket completely with 5 liters of water from 5 liter jug in the beginning doesn't help much since we are not able to make any measurement other than 4 or 5 liters in the immediate next step.So we fill the bucket with 4 liters from the 4 liter jug .
  2. And we get 4 liters from 5 liter jug into 4 liter jug to measure 1 liter in the 5 liter jug.

Now we have 4 liters in bucket 4 liters in 4 liter jug and 1 liter in 5 liter jug.

3.Pouring 1 liter from 5 liter jug into bucket doesn't help since it will only allow measuring 4 or 5 liters in the immediate next step ,which is same as possibilities available initially. So we pour 4 liters from the 4 liter jug into the bucket .

Now that bucket  has 8 liters of water and the 5 liter jug has 1 liter of water.

4.Transferring water to either jug from the bucket at this step is not helpful since it will still only allow us to measure  4 or 5 liters in the immediate next step. Additionally  we see that by using combination of 8 liter in bucket and 5 liter jug (upon being emptied) we can measure 3 liters of water in the bucket. So we do this by pouring 1 liter water from 5 liter jug into 4 liter jug to empty it.

Now  pouring 5 liter of water from bucket to  5 liter jug leaves us with 3 liters of water in the bucket ,1 liter of water in 4 liter jug and 5 liters of water in the bucket.

5.We need to pour 4 liters more in the bucket to reach our goal ,this can be done by completely filling 4 liter jug with water from 5 liter completely filled jug ,then pouring this 4 liter of water into the bucket.

After this 5 th step above ,our goal is reached .
