there are 8 cars in the parking area.

Let the number of cars be x

and the number of motorcycle be y

according to the first condition,

x + y = 20 ------- (1)

according to the second condition,

4x + 2y = 56 ------- (2)

multiplying equation 1 by 4

4x + 4y = 80 ------- (3)

subtracting equation 2 from 3

4x + 4y = 80

- 4x + 2y = 56

2y = 24

Therefore,

y = 24

2

y = 12

Therefore there are 12 motorcycles in the parking area

substituting the value of y in equation 1

x + 12 = 20

x = 20 - 12

x = 8

Therefore there are 8 cars.
