An external vendor is chosen to serve coffee twice a day. 100 coffee cups were offered by the company but as an incentive to have the cups in tact at the end of the day the company offered 30 paise for every cup remained safely and charged 90 paise for every broken cup. At an end of a day, the vendor received Rs. 4. How many cups did the vendor break?

= 100 × 0.3 = 30 Rs.

But he got = Rs. 4

If broken cups are x then

(100 - x) × 0.3 - 0.9x = 4

⇒ 30 - 0.3x-0.9x = 4

⇒ - 1.2x = 4 - 30

⇒ 1.2x = 26

⇒ x = 26/1.2 = 22 cups  (assuming the amount given was rounded off)
