There are 28 passengers on a bus. There are
two-and-a-half times as many passengers on the
phone as not on the phone. How many passengers
are on the phone?

Also  x = 2.5y ....(2)

So, substituting (2) in (1) y = 28 - 2.5y => y+2.5y = 28 => 3.5y = 28 => y = 8

Passengers on the phone x = 28 - 8 = 2.5 * 8 = 20.

Passengers not on the phone y = 8.
