Given : There are three drums containing 24 litre ,36 litre and 48 litre of diesel.

To Find: the capacity of the largest can that can measure the diesel in the three drums exact number of times.

Solution:

Sizes of drum  in liter

24 , 36 and 48

To find size of largest can in liters need to find HCF of 24 , 36 and 48

HCF ( 24 , 36 , 48)

24 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 3  = 2³ * 3¹

36 = 2* 2 * 3 * 3 = 2² * 3²

48 = 2* 2* 2 * 2 * 3 = 2⁴ * 3¹

HCF Highest common factor of given numbers is the largest factors which divides all the given numbers perfectly.

HCF = product of common factors of least power

HCF = 2²  * 3¹  = 12

size of largest can = 12 liter
