Solution :

Number of girls in the class = 35

Number of boys in the class = 45

  Total number of students = 35 + 45 = 80

a) We need to find the ratio of girls to boys

So, number of girls : number of boys

    = 35 : 45

    = ( 5 * 7 ) : ( 5 * 9 )

    = 7 : 9 ( by cancelling 5 )

b) We need to find the ratio of girls to total number of students

So, number of girls : total number of students

  = 35 : 80

  = ( 5 * 7 ) : ( 5 * 16 )

  = 7 : 16 ( by cancelling 5 )
