There are 38 coins in a collection of 20 paise coins and 25 paise coins. If the total value of the collection is Rs. 8.50, how many of each are there?

Medium

Solution

The number of 20 paise coins be x and,

The number of 25 paise coins be y.

Then, according to the given conditions we have

x+y=38 … (i) and

20x+25y=850 … (ii) [Since, 8.50 Rs = 850 paise]

Performing {(ii) −20× (i)}, we get

(20x+25y)−(20x+20y)=850−760

⇒5y=90

⇒y=

5

90

⇒y=18

Substituting the value of y in (i), we have

x+18=38

⇒x=38−18

⇒x=20

Therefore, the number of 20 paise coins are 20 and the number of 25 paise coins are 18.
