There are 5 hearts in a box,12 squares and 8 circles. If you were to select 1 shape at random what shape do you have the greatest possibility of selecting? Use a fraction to describe the probability.

  • Number of hearts in the box = 5
  • Number of squares in the box = 12
  • Number of circles in the box = 8
  • Total number of outcomes = 5 + 12 + 8 = 25

Probability (Event) = Number of favourable outcomes/Total number of outcomes

∴ According to the question,

  1. Probability (getting a heart) = 5/25 = 1/5
  2. Probability (getting a square) = 12/25
  3. Probability (getting a circle) = 8/25

As the number of squares in the box are maximum, the highest possibility of selecting a shape at random = A square shape

Respective probabilities in order are as follows:

1/5 < 8/25 < 12/25
