Out of all the sisters, each of them is doing some work on their own except two.
The one who is reading a book is reading it on her own.The other one who's cooking is doing it alone and with nobody else( as mentioned in the question), also the same goes for the girl who's doing laundry.
However, as mentioned, Kate is playing chess and chess cannot be played alone.It is game that involves two persons and therefore, from this point we can understand that the fifth sister is playing chess with Kate.
