Answer:

Let's round it to 50/50 for a moment. Half of 550 = 275

275 boys/ 275 girls

Because we have 50% of each we need to work out what goes into 275 five times..?

You guessed it, 55

5x55=275

We only have 40% so that then becomes 4x55=220

550–220= can't take zero from zero so that stays as zero, take two from five is three and two from five again we're left with three, so because I chose to write the working out of this last sum we'll be adding the numbers in a backwards order, like this….330.

So your school has 220 boys and 330 girls.

To double check your working out simply add this final figure to your multiplication figure and if it adds up to your original starting figure I'd say you'd have the correct answer ie: 330+220=550.

Bit of a story to get your answer sorry but I thought that in the event, I'd cater for people such as myself reading your post, ones who have a curious mind that like to know the in's and outs and how things work…. (It can get quite annoying at times though, not to mention time consuming especially knowing that 9.5/10 times, the topic/subject doesn't really have any bearing on nor does it directly improve my existence at that time. It does however give me knowledge, if it's retained, if I ever found myself needing it. Also there are those who are more visual when learning etc so hopefully my short story explanation might help someone.
