There are 90 multiple choice questions in a test. Two marks are awarded for every correct answer and one mark is deducted for every wrong answer. If vinay got 60 marks in the test while he answered all the questions, then how many questions did he answer correctly​

To find , the number of correct answers ie x

so x+y = 90(as he answered all the questions) ----- 1

2x - 1y = 60 --------2

( 2x because 2 marks will be given if it is a correct answer and -1y because 1 mark will be reduced for wrong answer and then 60 is his mark)

simplify both 1 and 2

2x - 1y = 60

 x + y = 90 (multiply by -2)

now,

2x - 1y = 60

-2x - 2y = -180

0x - 3y = -120

-3y = -120

y = -120/-3

y = 40

we know

x +y = 90

x + 40 = 90

x = 90 -40

x = 50

therefore he answered 50 questions correctly
