There are 990 students in a school. for a PT drill they have to stand in such a manner that the number of rows is equal to number of columns. how many students would be left out of this arrangement? Please submit your numerical answer.

Let us consider the number of rows as (a).

Now, since, number of rows = number of columns,

the number of columns will be also (a).

Now, the nearest perfect square which is less than 990 is 961.

We have done this because 990 is not a perfect square.

Forming an equation, we get -

a x a = 961

a² = 961

a = √961

a = 31

Students left = 990-961

                      = 29

Therefore, there will be 31 rows, 31 columns and 29 students will be left.
