let the number of men = x

number of women = 2x

number of children = 4 × 2x = 8x

total number of people = 5500

x + 2x + 8x = 5500

11x = 5500

x = 500

total number of men = x = 500

total number of women = 2x = 2 × 500 = 1000

total number of children = 8x = 8 × 500 = 4000
