The Earth we live in is formed of three major concentric layers, crust, mantle and the core.

The crust is uppermost portion of the Earth while core is the center most portion.

The discontinuity in the Earth can be understood from the change in velocity of waves while travelling to the center of the Earth which clearly shows that the Earth is not homogeneous.
