The three layers of the interior of earth; namely the crust, mantle, and the core are separated from each other by the zones that are termed as discontinuities.

The thickness of each layer differs from the next one, for which these transitional zones are important.

For example, lithosphere or the upper crust is 50 – 100 Km thick; while the lower or continental crust is 30 – 70 Km thick, which are separated by Mohorovicic discontinuity.

The components of each layer also differ from each other, for which the discontinuities are important. Lithosphere is made of tectonic plates and the continental crust is made of solid granite.
