First put four pills on each side of the balance scale. The heavier side contains the required pill. now out of the four pills on the heavier side, put two pills on each side of the balance scale. now we have two pills out of which one is the required one. Since we cannot use the balance scale more than two times, we will use another method to find out the desired pill.

Out of the two suspected pills, eat one. If you die, this means it was the required pill and if you are still alive, it means the other one is the required pill.
