Explanation:

There is a lot of concern over the use of mercury in thermometers since mercury is a toxic substance and is very difficult to dispose off if a thermometer breaks. Hence, these days, digital thermometers are available which do not use mercury.

Answer:

The thermometers available usually consisted of a long and thin glass tube sealed at one end, with a bulb filled with a liquid which is mercury at the other end.

Mercury is a very toxic and harmful substance. It is very difficult to dispose it off incase it breaks

Also as it is kept in the mouth of a patient generally any crack in the glass can lead to ingestion of this toxic element. Thus, patients are advised not to speak when a thermometer is kept in their mouth.

However, these have now been replaced by modern thermometers which do not contain mercury.
