The agency of UN working to preserve the historical monuments is UNESCO.

UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

UNESCO is a United Nation organization that works for the international peace and collaboration through its activities which are directed toward education and promotion of culture.

The five programs of UNESCO are

1. Education,

2. Natural sciences,

3. Social/human sciences,

4. Culture and

5. Communication/information.

Under the cultural program, the world heritage committee was formed to protect international historical monuments to preserve the culture and tradition.

But there are still many historical monuments lying neglected in the country which the UNESCO need to focus. some of them are

- Ancient Buddhist Site in Sarnath

- Sri Harimandir Sahib (The "Golden Temple")

- River Island of Majuli

- Monuments and Forts of the Deccan Sultanate

- Chettinad, Village Clusters of the Tamil Merchants

- Archaeological remains of Lothal
