Given:

P, Q, R, S, T, U, and V are seven members of a family.

The family runs into three generations.

The family has two married couples, three daughters, and two mothers.

S is the brother of R.

R, who is a widow, is the mother of U.

V is Q's son-in-law.

R is the only daughter of P.

To find:

Relation between T and U.

Solution:

1. S is the brother of R:

  • S and R are siblings and S is male.

2. R, who is a widow, is the mother of U.

  • R is a female and mother of U

3. V is Q's son-in-law.

  • Q may be married to S. If so, Q is female.
  • V is a male married to Q and S's daughter.

4. R is the only daughter of P.

  • P is the parent of R and S.

So, T will be the daughter of Q and S and T is married to V.

S and R are siblings and their daughters are T and U respectively.

Hence, the relation between T and U is a) the First cousin.

Additional points:

  • Q and P may be the parents of Rand S. This is not possible because then T is also their daughter but it is given R is their only daughter.
