The main reason additional neurotransmitters are valuable is because their receptors do different things. Because of the non-synaptic release, each neurotransmitter and the receptors it acts on are like a "channel" for a signal of a different purpose.
---Neurotransmitters have different types of action:
----Excitatory neurotransmitters encourage a target cell to take action.
Inhibitory neurotransmitters decrease the chances of the target cell taking action. ...
-----Modulatory neurotransmitters can send messages to many neurons at the same time.
