Explanation:
Early man was not a food producer¬- cultivation of crops was as yet unknown. He obtained food through a number of ways such as gathering ,scavenging, fishing and hunting.
1.GATHERING was practised as generally assured rather than conclusively established. It involved collecting plant foods such as seeds, nuts, berries, fruits and tubers.
It is also suggested that early hominids SCAVENGED or foraged for meat and marrow from the carcasses of animals that had died naturally or killed by other predators. It is equally possible that small mammals as rodents ,birds and their eggs reptils and even insects were eaten by hominids.
2.HUNTING probably began later as clear evidence for delebrate planned hunting and butchery of large mammals came from sites not earlier than 500,000 years ego. This was probably made possible by development of better tools , bigger brain size and greater cooperation.
There is evidence from other European sites also e.g., Dolni Vestonice near a river of planned hunting from about 35,000 years ago.Heards of migratory animals such as reindeer and horses probably crossed the river during autumn and spring time by the time large animals were killed at a time.
The evidence of fish bones and animal bones from the sites suggest that hunting and fishing were an important source of food.
