Gold is in the first box.

Explanation:

  • Given that each box contains a statement but only one of them is true.
  • Lets consider that the gold is in third box. Then, the statement in third box ( "the gold is in the second box") is a lie and both the statements in first and second box ( "the gold is not here") are true. Hence, this case is not possible.
  • Lets consider that second box has gold. Then, the statements in third box ("the gold is in the second box") and first box ("the gold is not here")  are true. Hence, this case is also not possible.
  • now, lets consider that the gold is in first box. Then, the statement in this box ("the gold is not here") and third box ("the gold is in the second box") are false and only statement of second box("the gold is not here") is true.
  • Hence, gold is in the first box
