Let the number of girls be x, then from the question, it is clear that number of boys are 3x,

Therefore, total no. of students = Number of boys + Number of girls = 3x+x=4x Now, the total number of children in the class must be a multiple of 4

(C) does not qualify this condition.

Therefore, 42 does not represent the total number of children in the class.
