Question - There are 3 types of sweets in a jar.

(Look at attached for table).

A sweet is chosen at random.

The probability that it is an Eclair is 1/15

Work out the probability that it is a humbug.

Given - Number of different sweets - eclair - 3, hambug - 2x+6 and mint - X.

Probability of eclair - 1/15

Find - Probability of sweet being hambug.

Solution - Probability is calculated by the formula - Number of outcome/Total number of outcomes.

Total number of sweet - 3 + 2x+6 + X = 3x+9.

Probability of sweet being eclair will be 3/3x+9. As per question, probability of sweet being eclair is 1/15.

So, 3/3x+9 = 1/15

45 = 3x+9

3x = 36

X = 12

So, number of mint is - 12.

Number of hambug - 2x+6 = 2*12+6 = 30.

Total number of sweets - 3x+9 = 3*12+9 = 45

Now, calculating probability of hambug - 30/45

Probability of sweet being hambug - 2/3.

Thus, probability of sweet being hambug is - 2/3.
