Given : total 117 pairs of socks in clothes bin.Each pair of socks is placed in a bag. The probabilities of selecting yellow pair of socks and grey pairs at random from the bin are 2 by 9 and 3 by 13 respectively.

To find : number of pair of socks in the bin which are i) yellow ii) neither yellow nor grey

Solution:

Total Pair of Socks  =  117

probabilities of selecting yellow pair of socks  = 2/9

=>  yellow pair of socks  = (2/9) * 117

=> yellow pair of socks  =  2 * 13

=> yellow pair of socks  =  26

probabilities of selecting green pair of socks  = 3/13

=> green pair of socks  = (3/13) * 117

=> green pair of socks  =  3 * 9

=> green pair of socks  =  27

number of pair of socks in the bin which are neither yellow nor grey

= Total - Yellow - Green

= 117 -  26 - 27

= 64

number of pair of socks in the bin

Yellow = 26

neither yellow nor grey  = 64
